Focus On Your Talent

June 04, 2019

After talking with a friend about how we felt about our current projects i was reminded of something. Just how important it is to make sure that you share every last ounce of your work with the world. Good or bad, people want to hear it and also know that not everyone is perfect. I know this because I made the decision to release all my best work out at the one time… that was four years ago.

Now it’s not like a regret it but it’s not a bad thing to have people say “i like their old stuff better”. Even if you think it’s total trash, but not showing your humble beginnings you only neglects a part of your audience! More importantly they are typically the ones that stick with you throughout your career and the evolution of your craft. If you’re a creative you know that there’s a method to your madness and that some people won’t understand that, but it doesn’t mean they won’t be able to relate to the passion that you put into your work.

To get a savvy with this reality it can be a big tool that you can harness to help you grow as a creator. Here’s two reasons why:

You give the people what they want! - By sharing all four walls of your abilities  the people can see which side of you is strongest. Now focus on those strengths not your weaknesses, im sure im not the first person to tell you that.

Minimise your risk - This is where it gets savvy and seems deceiving but it’s really for everyone's benefit. Now knowing what the people want you can minimus all the risky moves you make in your career. Don’t try prove to everyone that you can sing when you could be the next Picasso! Be Picasso, learn how to be Adele on the down low, share your progress, then come out like “look what i've been working on!” and drop your album “30” with the album cover looking like you stole it from the Louvre.

Fight smart not dirty.

Alright don’t take this so much as advise but like a new perspective that has come from experience, i know that i can get distracted from what i’m good at when i find a new interesting skill that i want to learn. Optimize your time with your talent, while that provides you the time and stability to learn how to grow and develop a skill that might not be as refined.
