Stranger Things

30 September, 2019

A little while ago I was renting a studio space and it was a great hook up with no more than a signature and a hand shake. Fast forward a month or so I walk in to find someone had stolen my mic and tried to take my guitar. No surveillance was in the building and I signed a contract that said in “lawyer” that anything, absolutely anything that happens within those four walls of my semi private, shared studio that they were not liable for any of it. It sucked for sure and only had my lack of attention to blame. So you can imagine how I might of had a hard time trusting people with my shit after that, Until recently.

Recently i got a message from a friend of mine who I’d consider my brother asking if a friend of his could use my studio for a space to record. I was hesitant but he was family and if he trusted this person then so did I. They meet me at my work I shake hands with this guy who I’d never met before by the name of Huy, I handed him my keys, explained how to get in and then he left. Now unlike before where i had a separate studio, my stepup resides in my apartment for now so those keys were actually to my apartment where there was a lot more than a just a mic to take. I was nervous no doubt but i just had to have blind faith.

I finished work and went straight home being let into my apartment as if I wasn't the one who sleeps there. Walking in i see a group of three hanging out with my gear and just working away stopping to say “hi” but not getting distracted by any means. I hang out with them contributing to the conversation and ideas until later that afternoon. It was spontaneous and inspiring to watch this small team work as if they had a charting Billboard song in their hands which at this point that felt more possible than them robbing me.

I lost some trust after losing an important part of something that I care so much about especially when I dreamed of offering this studio to the public for their production needs. So when I gave the keys to my apartment to a total stranger where I might as well said “take what you like!”, I hand a tough time considering it but I trust my friends and if that dream is to ever come true, I need to take a chance every once and while.
